Over the course of all these
years, I’ve managed to encapsulate Tori Amos’ visage in over fifty
(50) portraits. In fact, it has been from these that I have
developed and refined my current style of drawing, incorporating various pencil
techniques of blending and shading. It takes me a couple hours to
finish a well-contrasted and detailed 9"x12" portrait, reduced
from what, in the beginning of my portrait-drawing career, would have taken me a couple days of casual
work.
Many of the drawings I’ve completed were done so at a Denny’s restaurant (one of many at which I’ve been a “regular”) with nothing more than a pad, a mechanical pencil, some napkins, and a cup of coffee. The coffee, just in case you’re confused, was not used in the drawing process … at least, not directly. Whereas I have well over fifty drawings of Tori in my archived portfolio, I have only included the best 18 selections here, chronologically. After appreciating the quality and detail of these, my later representations of Tori, you might not care to see the amateurish, high-school-art-class flavour of my first attempts. But then, you may consider these latest ones to be amateurish as well, so it doesn’t matter anyway.
I did feel like including, however, my first drawing of Tori; pictured to the right. I guess it is worth the nostalgia factor, if nothing else, to display it here. Trust me when I say that it looks much, much better reduced down than it does at full size (which is why I haven’t linked it to its larger version). Well, that’s about it for now. I currently don’t have any plans to draw Tori again. I feel as if I have accomplished what I wanted to achieve when I started drawing picture after picture of her. I have drawn many other people, but Tori has the most drawings. I find her face very fascinating because it has so many different looks and expressions. That was the reason I kept drawing her. So much character. Besides that, she has incredible eyes, lips, and hair … and it’s quite fun recreating them on paper. My god, she’s sexy! Er, um … I’m sorry. What was I talking about?
